Page with redirect in Search Console: usually fine, sometimes a sign to clean up

The URL redirects to another page, so Google does not index it and may index the target. Usually fine: update internal links and the sitemap to the final URL.

What Google says

This is a non-canonical URL that redirects to another page. As such, this URL will not be indexed. The target URL of the redirect might or might not be indexed, depending on what Google thinks about that target URL.

Common causes

  • Normal address clean-up: http to https, www to the bare domain or back, a trailing slash added or removed.
  • Old URLs after a redesign or migration that now redirect to new ones.
  • Internal links, canonical tags or the sitemap still pointing at the old addresses, so Google keeps finding them.
  • A redirect that was not meant to be there, for example a page that redirects to the home page or a login page.

How to check

  1. Enter the old URL in the AI crawler checker or see a page as a bot to see where it ends up and with which status.
  2. Inspect the target URL in URL Inspection to see whether Google indexed it. That is the page that should rank.
  3. List the hops with curl -sIL https://example.com/old | grep -i -E '^(HTTP|location)'; more than one hop is worth flattening.

When to fix it and when to leave it

Most of the time you can leave it. Every redirecting URL Google knows about can appear here, and Google says "Non-indexed URLs can be fine." Act when the target is not indexed, when the redirect is not one you set up, or when your sitemap lists redirecting URLs instead of final ones. If Google could not follow the redirect at all, the message is Redirect error.

AI crawlers and AI search

Use a permanent redirect for a permanent move. Google says the indexing pipeline uses a 301 or 308 as a signal that the target should be canonical, while it does not use a 302, 303 or 307 that way (Redirects and Google Search). Only the target can be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, since Google requires an indexed page for that (AI features and your website). For every crawler, a single hop to the final URL means one request instead of a chain.

Questions

Is "Page with redirect" an error?

Not by itself. It lists URLs that redirect, which Google does not index. The target of the redirect can be indexed.

Should I remove redirecting URLs from my sitemap?

Yes. List the final addresses, the URLs you want indexed, so Google does not keep finding the redirecting ones.

Does Google treat a meta refresh as a redirect?

Google says it interprets an instant meta refresh as a permanent redirect and a delayed one as temporary.
